When it comes to facing issues and trusting in The Lord. I find the best way to stay out of "IFy" territory is
A) Praise and glorify God for the blessings in my life
B) state my needs clearly to the Lord in prayer - be specific [Mike can relate I'm not very clear in communication]
C) Pray for the Gift of Patience and Understanding - of God's will
D) Be patient, be quiet in prayer and listen - God may be trying to tell me something
E) Whether my prayer is answered my way or not, give Thanks and Praise again because he always hears me and gives me the strength to endure
F) Meditate, what have I learned in the struggle and how can I grow in my spiritual life and how can I share what I've learned with others.

D is still a struggle for me.

God wants us to know that whatever burden we are going thru, it will never be too difficult for us to bear. Even in the worst day, we can find rest in Him. Sometimes it is hard for us to realize that or understand it. He gives us a peace only He can give to us thru our petitions and prayers. How on earth could Jesus be so calm in the Garden of Gethsemane knowing what was happening and he knew it would be leading to his suffering and death? I want to have that kind of trust in God. Jesus knew the strength in his prayers. God gave him peace. In every circumstance we need to trust God.

comments on Why is it hard for a rich man to get into Heaven?, posted by Cindy

Material riches can be a great blessing and used to bless many in need and do great things for God's work. But they can also be a trap.
The gospel of Luke teaches the danger of riches and how it changes and/or affects the hearts of believers. Paul warned greed and the desire to be rich can become types of idolatry. I feel our society uses brand names, etc as symbols of being "rich". Designer things promoted by famous people, clothing, handbags, shoes etc that elite/wealthy/famous people use that people want them because it makes them feel "the look of wealth" that goes to a 'heart' problem
like "keeping up with the Jones'" We want recognition and status because we sport certain objects to have an appearance of what? Being rich? Being important? We have to also guard our hearts from those feelings. It is much easier for a poor man to leave everything and follow God.. why? Cuz he has less to lose. Now a rich man, referring to verse 22 Jesus says
sell everything and give it to the poor and you will have treasure in heaven, come and follow me... And he was sad because he was wealthy. He had just stated all he had done in his life and followed the commandments, but when Jesus said that, was it because he was shocked Jesus would ask him to do that, or was that kind of truth for salvation hard to believe, or is it hard to miss the truth when delivered straight and matter of fact? The man believed enough of who Jesus was to ask how to get that salvation, but didn't like Jesus' answer. And Jesus could see that even a rich man had a hard time giving up his fortune for what God offered.

Something to ponder....(not my own words but took it from Bishop Barron's Sunday homily)....If Jesus stood before you today and asked you to follow him, would your tomorrow look any different than your yesterday? What do we hold of value above following the Lord. Now let me use my "I" statements. What do I hold of value above following and doing the Lord's work?

Cindie and Priscilla, both great views. I believe we try to make value of what other people see us instead of the value in what God sees us. I think we try so hard for everyone else to have the "wow that guy really has it all" view of us instead of realizing that God has already given us everything according to His riches.

I agree with all he comments. People look at the outward man but God looks at the inward man. It's okay to have nice things but we should never let those things be our God or Idol. You will never see a U-haul following a hearse. So, yes, the question that Priscilla states, What do "I" hold of value above following and doing the Lord's work?

Sam once asked me a couple of years ago when we were living in the house close to mom, "Mom, why dont you get a bigger house". I told him "We dont need one and would he rather me spend all my money on a huge house or spend what we have and have money left over to go places and do things". I am trying to teach him young that we dont need big and fancy things and all it does is bring unwanted attention to ourselves. I dont make alot of money but I sure have all that I need. Cindy you were spot on in your response. It amazes me how many people you see that always have to have the newest IPhone, a new car every 2 years, etc. These things do not value your life or your relationship with God.

Matthew 5:44 very clearly says to love, bless and do good to our enemies. Ephesians 4:32 "and be ye kind one to another, tenderhearted, forgiving one another, even as God for Christ's sake hath forgiven you."
If we have hate in our hearts, will will not be able to forgive those who have done wrong to us.

Matthew 6:14
"For if ye forgive men their trespasses, your heavenly Father will also forgive you:"

Matthew 6:15
"but if ye forgive not men their trespasses, neither will your Father forgive your trespasses."

We need to pay very close attention to Matthew 6:15.

Forgiving (with love) does not mean that what happened to us by someone else is OK or that we continue to allow abuse of this kind to continue. We simply refuse to allow ourselves to become consumed by how others have treated us. We love because God loves, and our goal is to become "little" Christs to others in this world. To love someone (quoting Bishop Robert Barron) is to 'Will their ultimate good' and what can be better than God himself? So we pray that our enemies have a sincere conversion of heart and turn to God. We may never know here on earth, how loving another person will affect their life or human history, and so we do it anyways.

All you can do is to pray that your enemies will change their ways. I dont think you need to pray all the time for them. Just maybe that one time after they do you wrong. It is not good to hold grudges if someone does you wrong. Say a prayer and move on and make sure they are not a part of your life anymore. You are to love everyone. I don't think that God intended it to be you going up to them and saying it. I think it means more of "Don't be ugly to them and don't be evil back to them" That saying of 2 wrongs don't make a right. It is difficult to not hold a little resentment towards someone. I am even guilty of that and try to do my best. I just prefer not to have them in my life and problem is solved.

Wow, does this one hit home... Just had my supposed "best friend and neighbor" throw accusations against me of things I did not say, and then refused to answer my calls or open the door to talk to me. And is now trying to turn my neighbors against us with her bad
talk about me. After calming myself down, I responded to her message and accusations and broke each one down describing the conversation and my response and asked how she could even come up with what she said and told her she knows she is wrong.... I was heartbroken she would do this to me and just couldn't understand... But you know what, I have just prayed for her. She's wrong, and she knows it. And God knows I didnt say those things.
That's where I get my peace and forgiveness for her.

2 Corinthians 5:7 We walk by faith, not by sight.
Faith is defined as "complete trust or confidence in something or someone" The power of faith is that we obey even when we cannot see the end. We have to believe God will take care of us even tho we cant see what or where he is taking us in our good times and bad times. God always knows whats best for us. We cant see the works he has going on for us, we have to trust what he is doing.
Look at the faith Shadrach, Meshach & Abed Nego had!!! Would we have that? Looking at sure death in a fiery furnace? I think today society has so many distractions that take us away from God, faith, etc... many have lost hope and faith because so many bad things do happen on a regular basis. Our faith should be based on what the future has for us.... the final fulfillment of Gods promises, the 2nd coming of Christ, new heavens and earth. Hebr 13:14 "For we do not have an enduring city, but are looking for the city that is to come"
Jesus is the author and finisher of our faith. We just have to take Him at His word.

Great Cindie, I purposely did not include 2nd Corinthians 5:7 being most people use that as the basis of the subject. I figured someone would respond with that. We have to quit relying on our own and truly trusting what God has for us.

When I read what you wrote Mike, a comment I hear alot and have said myself is "Things happen for a reason and only God/Jesus knows why" You have to have faith that a reason something in your life has not happened is because God did not allow it. You have to have faith and understand that there is a purpose or reason why it did not happen. It should not discourage you from having faith. You must be patient and understand that there are other forces at work to get you to that end result you are seeking.

I agree with all the comments. We are to walk by Faith and not by sight. It is easy to want to give up hope because we do not see with our physical eyes an answer to prayer or an answer to our circumstances. Sometimes, the smallest things get answered immediately but then the bigger things in our lives take much longer. I have to keep faith that God does know His plan and to rely solely on Him. Having that faith and trusting Him with all areas of my life. I am learning to tell God that I trust Him and will not take matters into my own hands. I ask myself the question frequently..."do I want to do things my way or have Faith in God and let Him do things His way?"
