Jesus Raises Jairus’ Daughter From The Dead

Matthew 9:23-26 (Also in Mark 5:21-43 and Luke 8:40-56)

(23) And when Jesus came into the ruler's house, and saw the minstrels and the people making a noise, (24) he said unto them, Give place: for the maid is not dead, but sleepeth. And they laughed him to scorn. (25) But when the people were put forth, he went in, and took her by the hand, and the maid arose. (26) And the fame hereof went abroad into all that land.

Here we have the continuation of Jesus’s original plan when the women came and touched His garment. Now He continues on to Jairus’ home. I like how Jesus States that she only sleeps, and they start to mock Him. These people clearly have not heard yet of all He has done. In Mark’s version He made all those with the unbelief leave and only allowed the parents and those with Jesus to stay. He calls for her and reaches out and takes her by the hand and she rises.

There is one thing we can take out of this story. It is important that we remove people out of our lives that compromise the faith around us. Jesus made those who were skeptical about Him and only allowed those who believed. We hear many times, I’ll start believing once I see, but then you yourself do not have the faith to ever see. Do not expect anything spectacular. I think we want Jesus to put only massive display for everyone to see and start believing, and that is not how it works. We should be the salt and light of the world. But if we keep surrounding ourselves with unbelievers, we ourselves will not be able to allow God to truly manifest Himself to us.

Matthew 5:13 Ye are the salt of the earth: but if the salt have lost his savour, wherewith shall it be salted? it is thenceforth good for nothing, but to be cast out, and to be trodden under foot of men

Hebrews 11:1 Now faith is the substance of things hoped for, the evidence of things not seen.

Hebrews 11:6 But without faith it is impossible to please him: for he that cometh to God must believe that he is, and that he is a rewarder of them that diligently seek him.

Matthew 17:20 And Jesus said unto them, Because of your unbelief: for verily I say unto you, If ye have faith as a grain of mustard seed, ye shall say unto this mountain, Remove hence to yonder place; and it shall remove; and nothing shall be impossible unto you.

As I study this, it really brings home to me about many decision of removing certain people out of my life. Yes, we are to love everyone, but extremely limit the type of influence they have on our lives. I choose to surround myself with those of like beliefs and are always progressing forward.

I think it was planned by God about the delay getting to Jairus' home.

The woman with bleeding issues caused Jesus to stop and recognize her need.

Jairus and his family knew she was close to dying. In Mark 5:23 he is pleading with Jesus that his daughter is near death, to go and lay hands on her for healing. The woman who touched his garment delayed his going to Jairus' home, we don't know how long of a delay. However, shortly after this delay Jairus now said for Jesus not to bother about it, she has died. And Jesus says to him "be not afraid, only believe" (verse36).

Jairus was a synagogue leader. Now these guys are hearing and seeing what's been going on with this Jesus guy. Most of the Jewish leaders did not believe who Jesus was saying he was, and accusing Jesus of using sorcery and witchcraft.

Jairus obviously did believe who or what Jesus was, (or the reputation of those healings) enough to go to him and ask for healing for his daughter.

We go from an unclean woman who is an outcast who Jesus heals, to the synagogue leaders daughter to heal. Quite the contrast in social status! Was the message that no matter your social status, Jesus is the answer? Did the delay to finally get to the leaders daughter only glorify God, that again He has the power over death? No matter what the circumstances are? It's all about God's timing, not ours.

Jesus healing her was not defined by their urgency for him to get to her. Raising her from death, not illness. Surely, Jairus knew from that moment when Jesus told her to rise, and she did... that Jesus was the messiah.

It was defined by the belief in Jesus. Who he was and what divine power was given

to him from God. Jesus knew the bleeding woman needed him just as much as the dying daughter.

Curious also, that Jesus tells them to give the young girl something to eat.

Sometimes God's delay brings us a greater demonstration of His power. So sometimes when we start wondering why our prayers aren't answered right away, we need to remember that there may be an even greater message and demonstration of what God has going on for you.

Our faith has to rely in Jesus.

Trust Jesus to define truth, not about what the crowd is saying.

Our timing and God's timing are different.

You are right Mike, the people surrounding us should not be so different from us we

diminish/distract Jesus in our life.

Look at the message we send out to the world when if even we don't receive the healings, blessings or miracles we pray for, yet we still have our faith and belief planted in God. That even our lives aren't perfect and have the same ups and downs, sorrows and disappointments in life like everyone else has. That we still trust Him, hold firm to our belief in Him, and still have the hope for things we cannot see.

Everything you said above is so on point. When we read the scriptures and studies, there are so many ideas and angles to view. That is the beauty of the Word of God. You can pull so much truth and discussions from one small passage. We could literally take each small passage and spend weeks discussing and learning. I do believe Jesus' timing is critical whether we feel it is early, on time or late. in Jairus' case would it have been better for him to have seen his daughter healed of the sickness or risen from the dead. Which scenario would have had a more impact on Jairus. Was it Jesus' design to have Jairus at his lowest point to see how much he would hold on to his faith? There are so many lessons we can pull from this event.

Yes, Mike I think that when Jairus tells Jesus his daughter has died and not to bother, he was absolutely at his lowest. And perhaps he couldnt understand why Jesus still would go to her. Did Jesus know that Jairus felt that only He could heal her, he had that much hope in Jesus and whom He may be? Imagine the terrible sorrow of a parent and then the incredulous emotions of her sitting up to the hand of Jesus.

This was a great read and good feedback from Mom and Mike! This story made me go digging in my notes and I found a sermon I listened to on 3/19/23 on Who Do You Say Jesus Is? Often times our relationship with Jesus is based on what we've heard instead of leaning on our own understanding and knowing of who Jesus really is and what He selflessly did for us .

While I too try to pick my friendships with those who have the same beliefs as I do, I often choose to keep those around that I feel could use someone in their corner. Those who I know are good people but struggle with depression, have lost their faith through circumstance or many other reasons. It's not my job to judge them or push my beliefs on them, but my hope is that when they see Sean & I struggle yet overcome with faith some of the similar things like anxiety and all "what ifs" that they go through too, that they too will see God's goodness and grace.

I love the way the show The Chosen illustrated this scene on the screen. (it's free, you gotta watch it!). While Jesus was on his way to Jairus', someone touched the hem of his garment, and I always think "He could of kept walking"..wouldn't most of us? But God's timing is always right and He knew that His Father had the power to heal both individuals, regardless of time or status/creed like Mom pointed out. Her faith was so strong that Jesus stopped acknowledged and healed her. Wow! She wasn't an inconvenience to His plan, He wasn't worried about if He'd be late, God's timing is always right. I needed that remember myself!
