Mark 1:21-27         (Also found in Luke 4:31-36)

(21) And they went into Capernaum; and straightway on the sabbath day he entered into the synagogue, and taught. (22) And they were astonished at his doctrine: for he taught them as one that had authority, and not as the scribes. (23) And there was in their synagogue a man with an unclean spirit; and he cried out, (24) saying, Let us alone; what have we to do with thee, thou Jesus of Nazareth? art thou come to destroy us? I know thee who thou art, the Holy One of God. (25) And Jesus rebuked him, saying, Hold thy peace, and come out of him. (26) And when the unclean spirit had torn him, and cried with a loud voice, he came out of him. (27) And they were all amazed, insomuch that they questioned among themselves, saying, What thing is this? what new doctrine is this? for with authority commandeth he even the unclean spirits, and they do obey him. (28) And immediately his fame spread abroad throughout all the region round about Galilee.

A great story here as we see Jesus going into the Synagogue and teaching. And more than likely it seems He is teaching against the grain of what normally is taught there. He taught with Authority, as the scribes only taught probably from texts. (Old Testament Law probably)

In the Synagogue there was a man with an unclean spirit. (Even in the safety of our churches, we will and do encounter people who spirit does not line up with the word of God. These people are usually the ones who would create strife amid the congregation.) And He recognized Jesus was. (The Truth always prevails) Ask if He has come to destroy him. Jesus Rebukes him, saying hold thy peace, and come out of him. One thing to note, the man is not being rebuked but the spirit he has. At times we need to be rebuked to get rid any unclean spirits we may have lurking inside us.

Everyone was amazed of the authority Jesus has, that even unclean spirits have to obey. Asking what doctrine, it was. Jesus came to fulfill the law and now was a new doctrine of grace being installed. Jesus came to give life, not to destroy it. And the fame of what he did starts to spread.

Philippians 4:13  I can do all things through Christ which strengtheneth me.

James 4:7  Submit yourselves therefore to God. Resist the devil, and he will flee from you.

John 10:10 The thief cometh not, but for to steal, and to kill, and to destroy: I am come that they might have life, and that they might have it more abundantly.
