Luke 5:1-11  (Matthew 4:18-22 recount the story of Peter, James, and John following Jesus but not the miracle.)

(1) And it came to pass, that, as the people pressed upon him to hear the word of God, he stood by the lake of Gennesaret, (2) and saw two ships standing by the lake: but the fishermen were gone out of them, and were washing their nets. (3) And he entered into one of the ships, which was Simon's, and prayed him that he would thrust out a little from the land. And he sat down, and taught the people out of the ship. (4) Now when he had left speaking, he said unto Simon, Launch out into the deep, and let down your nets for a draught. (5) And Simon answering said unto him, Master, we have toiled all the night, and have taken nothing: nevertheless at thy word I will let down the net. (6) And when they had this done, they inclosed a great multitude of fishes: and their net brake. (7) And they beckoned unto their partners, which were in the other ship, that they should come and help them. And they came, and filled both the ships, so that they began to sink. (8) When Simon Peter saw it, he fell down at Jesus' knees, saying, Depart from me; for I am a sinful man, O Lord. (9) For he was astonished, and all that were with him, at the draught of the fishes which they had taken: (10) and so was also James, and John, the sons of Zebedee, which were partners with Simon. And Jesus said unto Simon, Fear not; from henceforth thou shalt catch men. (11) And when they had brought their ships to land, they forsook all, and followed him.

By now Jesus has a following from the miracles he has done already. As he come to the lake he sees 2 fishing vessels with the fishermen out of the boats and washing their nets. He gets into one of the boats. Can you imagine what the fishermen might of though of this guy getting in the boat. They probably had heard of Him, but the scripture is not clear on that. Has Simon go away from shore so he could teach the people more. After talking with the people tells Simon to cast his nets again, Simon says they have tried all night and caught nothing. But at His word he would let the nets down again. So lets take a look at the results Of Simon(Peter) obedience to the Lord.

1. They caught a great multitude of fish which caused their net to break, when previously they had caught none.

2. They had to get help from their partners that their "blessing” was so overwhelming

3. Both fishing vessels begin to sink with such a huge catch "blessing”

4. Peter (Simon) Confesses he is a sinful man, Calls Jesus LORD, because he is astonished at what had just happened along with James and John.

Jesus then tells the 3 of them, from now on they would be catchers of men. When they got their ships to land, they abandoned everything and followed Jesus.

We find Jesus now has His first 3 disciples. It was a no brainer for these to follow Jesus after the monstrosity of miracle he just performed. What would it take for you to see to abandon everything you own, and go into full time ministry, where everything you do now is teaching and spreading the gospel?

Matthew 4:19  And he saith unto them, Follow me, and I will make you fishers of men.

1 Corinthians 9:14  Even so hath the Lord ordained that they which preach the gospel should live of the gospel.

Mark 13:10 And the gospel must first be published among all nations.

1 Corinthians 9:16  For though I preach the gospel, I have nothing to glory of: for necessity is laid upon me; yea, woe is unto me, if I preach not the gospel!

You know what I like about this story, that Jesus is starting to pick his disciples and
He isnt choosing them based on their religious expertise or knowledge, but their commitment to His cause, not their qualifications.    They just up and left, boats, nets, their normal lives to go with him. What would we need to see to do that, to believe?
In Jewish traditions the men who wanted to be like a rabbi would ask  "can I follow you?"  asking to be chosen for that process. Here we have Jesus waltzing in and stating only to
" follow me" and  they dropped everything to  go follow Him.  No questions asked.
