Ecclesiastes 3:6 A time to get….

In today’s society we are always in the mindset to get, get, get, and get more. You will see it all over social media. With that mind set, it becomes very selfish when not used in the right attitude. You can get physical things and get knowledgeable things. You can get Ideas. You can get anything. You can get to another place. The Bible does give us some great examples of when to "get”. Let’s look at a few.

Matthew 13:54 (NIV)  Coming to his hometown, he began teaching the people in their synagogue, and they were amazed. "Where did this man get this wisdom and these miraculous powers?” they asked.

Here we see a great example of how the people were amazed at Jesus’s teachings and had asked, where did He get this wisdom and power? If there is ever a time to "get”, it would be to get the wisdom and the power of God. We should get the fruits of the spirit as written in Galatians 5:22-23. We should be constantly getting the things pertaining to God. We need to get God’s word in our hearts.

Proverbs 3:13  Happy is the man that findeth wisdom, and the man that getteth understanding.

Psalm 119:104  Through thy precepts I get understanding: therefore I hate every false way.

Proverbs 4:5 Get wisdom, get understanding: forget it not; neither decline from the words of my mouth.

Proverbs 16:16  How much better is it to get wisdom than gold! and to get understanding rather to be chosen than silver!

We need to be listening to God. Many time we are told to get to certain places.

Genesis 12:1  Now the Lord had said unto Abram, Get thee out of thy country, and from thy kindred, and from thy father's house, unto a land that I will shew thee:

Matthew 14:22  And straightway Jesus constrained his disciples to get into a ship, and to go before him unto the other side, while he sent the multitudes away.

So often we might be led or told to get to a place that God wants us to be. God even to Lot to get out of Sodom. God has His plan for each and every one of us. We are all unique, and God will get us on each on our own paths that He has set forward.

Psalm 25:4  Shew me thy ways, O Lord; teach me thy paths.

Psalm 119:35  Make me to go in the path of thy commandments; for therein do I delight.

Proverbs 3:6  In all thy ways acknowledge him, and he shall direct thy paths.

We might even be tasked to get things.

Matthew 17:27  Notwithstanding, lest we should offend them, go thou to the sea, and cast an hook, and take up the fish that first cometh up; and when thou hast opened his mouth, thou shalt find a piece of money: that take, and give unto them for me and thee.

Here we find Jesus telling Peter that he needed to go fishing and the 1st fish he catches there will be a coin he can bring back to pay Jesus’s tribute to those who came for collection. Peter was told to get the coin and where to find it.

Matthew 21:2  saying unto them, Go into the village over against you, and straightway ye shall find an ass tied, and a colt with her: loose them, and bring them unto me.

Jesus here sends two disciples into the city to get a donkey for Him to ride upon entering the city.

Throughout the Bible we will find all kind of reason to get for multiple reasons. We need to discern for each of us when it is our time to get, whether it is to retrieve, learn, or moving from one place to another. The scriptures are clear in this endeavor. If we go back and really focus on Proverbs 33:13, I quoted earlier, that would be the start to us understanding these times. Going back to the very beginning of this study, God's reason for telling us when it is time to get is for His glory and His way to help us and not our own selfish reasons.

Get" is a verb, it's definition means: to gain possession of, to earn, obtain, to strive for or to seek out.

In life we "get" many things, we get jobs, we get a car, we get a home, we get married, we get groceries, we get friends...the list is endless! They all have a different affect and reason when we get them. In today's world, the more 'we get' the more we appear successful. That is how we are perceived and our value as a person is determined. Is the more you seem to 'get' truly the value of your worth or character? Most people do think that. Being considered rich, is because you were able 'to get' and have so much money and possessions.
Mike makes the point of what you get and how you use it are very important. Seeking first God's wisdom and be led to the purpose God has for it. We know that we can't take anything we have on earth when we die with us. No matter what our riches are, they stay here when we die. The pursuit of riches is vanity indeed. God says we don't need much, our portion should be sufficient. Yes, many people do get blessed by wealth. But, what happens to a lot of them? Excessive possessions, luxuries, lust, wastfulness, drinking, drunkness, vanity ...some wind up broke. Is that representative of a blessing? Everything we do and get is what God allows.
All these things we have been studying the past few weeks is showing us there is a purpose for our time here on earth, and there will be many good things and negative things all thru our lives. All the things we get can be used for good or bad.
It's how we look at things we get, how we decide to be thankful for them and always thank God.
I think if we stay focused on getting our wisdom and knowledge from God's words, we will always get his grace and blessings. Remember that sometimes when we don't get what we are wanting or seeking, God sees further down the road and wants us to wait on His timing.
We should not be seeking to "get" things to make us appear a certain way because we want to impress others, appear we have more than we have, or to be greedy and selfish.
The devil can also brings way to bless you, knowing how weak the human flesh is. If we let God do the blessing for us using His wisdom to decided what we need, etc we hopefully will be more conscience and thankful in what we do with it.
We should be happy with our portion in life, big or small.
Prov 16:5 "The Lord is the portion of mine inheritance and my cup: thou maintainest my lot."
Tim 6:10 "For the love on money is the root of all evil..."
So when we think of all we have and we did "get" so far in our lives, are we doing good with it? Are we thankful? Are we generous? Are we giving? Are we doing God's work?
Mike has listed a few great verses from Proverbs.
Here's a few more verses to read: Prov 10:22, Prov 22:1, Prov 23:5, Matt 19:24, Ecc 5:19, Ecc 2:26, Matt 6:19-21.
