Ecclesiastes 3:7 …and a time to sew…

When we look at the definition of sew, it generally pretty much means what it says, and usually pertaining to fixing garment/clothing. It could also be used as a term for, "patching things up”.  Nevertheless, it would be deemed repairing or even making something complete that was apart. We will be focusing still more on the spiritual side today.

Genesis 3:7  And the eyes of them both were opened, and they knew that they were naked; and they sewed fig leaves together, and made themselves aprons.

Here we go to the very beginning of Genesis. We know the story of Adam and Eve, they were made in God’s image, naked, and they walked and fellowshipped with God. It was only after they both partook in the eating of the forbidden fruit; did they realize they were naked, and they started to hide themselves from the presence of God. I like to look at it this way, Adam and Eve purposely put "sewed” something to separate them from God. After God, pretty much scolded them, God Himself then makes them clothing from animal hide.

Genesis 3:21 Unto Adam also and to his wife did the Lord God make coats of skins, and clothed them.

The thing I find interesting here is Adam and Eve were living in a perfect environment and only because of them not wanting to trust in God, did their environment now seem to be imperfect, so they take it upon themselves to attempt to make it perfect again, which they can not do. Think of the outcome of instead of them covering themselves up and hiding if they would have went straight to God after realizing what they did. Maybe with a regretful heart they may have been allowed to stay in the garden.

Job 14:17  My transgression is sealed up in a bag, and thou sewest up mine iniquity.

This is a great verse we seem from Job. Think if Adam and Eve would have had Job’s attitude. Grateful and praise giving for everything, even the bad times. But God knows us, we will be needing to be mended from time to time. We have to understand that God wants to be able to sew up and seal our iniquities. We need to know by now that if we do anything wrong or need any help, we need to go straight to God, and not hide and try to sew it up ourselves.

The main focal point is to make things right. Remember we are a broken sinner. We need to be stitched up and put back together, not just in the physical sense but in the spiritual sense also.

Romans 12:2  And be not conformed to this world: but be ye transformed by the renewing of your mind, that ye may prove what is that good, and acceptable, and perfect, will of God.

2 Corinthians 4:16  For which cause we faint not; but though our outward man perish, yet the inward man is renewed day by day.

Ephesians 4:23  And be renewed in the spirit of your mind;

Hebrews 6:6  If they shall fall away, to renew them again unto repentance; seeing they crucify to themselves the Son of God afresh, and put him to an open shame.

We need to figure out even in our minds and bodies there are areas that need to be sewn. Areas that need to be repaired. Renewing means you are mending because something has become old. There are other verses pertaining on or subject "a time to sew”, bus as stated I wanted to stary focused on the spiritual side. I know myself I need to be working on my spiritual state with God, and have lots of sewing to do.

Mike has covered Adam and Eve and why they sewed up fig leaves. Pretty much the first time recorded the "covering up" for something thinking they could hide it.

Meaning the sin, of course! Now, they felt fear.
Gen 3:10 " And he said, I heard thy voice in the garden, and I was afraid, because I was naked; and I hid myself."
Originally being naked and clothed in God's glory, nothing was needed. No sin = no awareness of anything different, even being naked.
Thanks for ruining that for us Adam and Eve.
We do the same when we sin. We cover it, hide it, try to "sew" it up, so to speak, with something to rationalize it, smooth it over, make it better, etc.
In Solomons time the rending would be appropriate in tearing of the clothing like we mentioned last week. It would be during the act of repenting and confession of a sin, and tearing away of the garments in the agony and sorrow of the sin commited. After Jesus' time, people could confess their sins and receive forgiveness asking thru Jesus. He would now "sew" up our hearts instead of our clothes, and give us His grace and love.
Psalm 139:5 "Thou hast beset me from behind and before, and laid thine hand upon me."
Psalm 139:13-14 " For thou hast possessed my reins; thou hast covered me in thy mother's womb. I will praise thee; for I am fearfully and wonderfully made; marvelous are thy works; and my soul knoweth right well."
God has made us and formed us. He has made us, sewn us up from the beginning from dust, in His image.
Do you know what "bespoke" means? It is to make a custom made garment. You are measured on the body for whatever garment being made, a suit, shirt, pants and it is sewn up just for you and your body only. It is tailored, "sewn", just for you, to your own measured specifications.
Sewing up of the hem, would be the finishing touches to clean up the ragged edges.
We are bespoke by God. He has made me and you with specific measurements of our physical bodies, mental capabilities and emotional specifications that He gave us.
He knows what we need in our lives, and when we come to Him in repentance of our sins, he sews up our ragged edges of our clothing for His righteousness. He sews us up broken hearts, heals us, and gives us his love, mercy and grace. Every detail about us is perfect to God!
Our creator is like our tailor. We are each a unique person.
Sewn up just the way God wanted us to be. He has made us according to His specific plan. We need to let God sew us up when we fall short of His glory. Let Him hem our worn and tattered edges back up. When it is our time to sew, let's lean unto Jesus and the Father for the tailoring only He can provide!
Eph 2:10 " For we are his workmanship, created in Christ Jesus unto good works, which God hath before ordained that we should walk in them."
1 Sam 16:7 " ....look not on his countenance, or on the height of his stature; because I have refused him: for the Lord seeth not as man seeth; for man looked on the outward appearance, but the Lord looked on the heart."

Hmm, I like what you said about God had sewn us up from the dust in His image. That will preach! Great continuation. EPHESIANS 2:10, ANOTHER GREAT EXAMPLE.
