Week 6 Review
Written by David
Quick show of hands who thought Texas was going to do THAT? The Longhorns racked up nearly 600 yards of total offense in the 49-0 shutout and held the Sooners to 195 total yards in the Red River beat down. It’s become pretty apparent that Oklahoma is in rebuild mold after falling to 3-3 on the season.
19th ranked Kansas’ undefeated season ended at the hands of #17 TCU in a 38-31 loss despite losing their starting quarterback in the second quarter. The Jayhawks actually outgained the Horned Frogs with the game being decided in the last minute of play. Meanwhile TCU stayed undefeated in a surprisingly fun Big 12 race.
In a thriller, Purdue outlasted Maryland 31-29. That game was a back and forth affair that kept us all squirming in our seats.
Chip Kelly and #18 UCLA continue to remain unbeaten after outlasting #11 Utah 42-32 in a battle of two Pac-12 heavyweights. Both USC and UCLA are the only unbeaten teams in the conference.
Okay Tennessee, you put the entire country on notice after the 40-13 thumping of #25 LSU in Baton Rouge. You really want to take it to a whole other level? Now go beat Alabama next week.
The North Carolina / Miami game was fun. Cane quarterback Tyler Van Dyke threw for nearly 500 yards and three scores in the loss. The Tar Heels intercepted a pass to hold on to win 27-24 but Miami had plenty of opportunities but didn’t take advantage.
FSU also had shot to win the game against #14 North Carolina State, and was well within field goal range trailing 19-17… but a head scratcher of a decision to throw the ball towards the end zone was intercepted to seal the victory for the Wolfpack. I’m sure Florida State head coach Mike Norvell would like to have that call back.
Bama S.U.R.V.I.V.E.D. If Bryce Young can’t get the nod in Knoxville next weekend, it may be trouble for the Tide. That was an ugly football game.
…But not as ugly as the Illinois 9-6 victory over Iowa.
You probably didn’t realize it because you were too busy trying to ‘unsee’ the horrendous FSU call that ended the game…but Syracuse is quietly 5-0.
On to the picks…
Six of the Pick’ems games came down to the wire. That’s insane!
Stemple needed a BIG week and got one after snagging 50 points! He promptly shot up from 9th place to 5th place.
No need to take this serious, but Megan just moved into third place. It’s probably only temporary because Sean will be good for some face-planting advice this week.
You have to feel bad for Adam. Not only does the poor guy watch his team lose on a ridiculous play call from a coach who makes millions of dollars, but because of the loss, he got knocked out of first. If FSU had taken a field goal to win the game, he’d still be in first place. Talk about a double whammy.
Mike probably doesn’t realize he’s going the wrong way similar to that Dumb and Dumber scene. He’s gone from 5th place, to 7th place, to the 9th spot.  He will eventually run into Sean and figure it out that he took a wrong turn…maybe.
Sean’s kind of worked himself into a bigger hole. He might nail that one upset pick right every now and then, but it’s the other upset picks that don’t go his way is the bigger problem.
Cindie just can’t work her way out of the pushing and shoving that’s going on in the middle of the pack and currently sits in 6th place. She had a fantastic week 5 and then followed it up with an Iowa-like offensive game plan approach.
Most Points for the week: Stemple got in on the fun by scoring 50 points in a challenging week! That’s Stemple’s second time of scoring 50-plus points in a week.
Least Points for the week: For a change, it’s not Noah. Sean will take this week’s honor. <cue sad trombone sound> It’s only slightly ironic that Jacob plays the Trombone.
Best Pick of the week: Let’s go with Marc, Adam, and Sean rolling the dice on UCLA beating Utah.
Worst Pick of the week: Adam and Wendi throwing 8 and 9 points respectively on Maryland beating Purdue. Heck, even Noah sort-of knew what he was doing as he stuck 1-point on Purdue. Okay fine, it was probably a lucky guess on Noah’s part.
Here’s how we rank heading into Week 7:
1.        David – 253 Points
2.        Adam – 248 Points
3.        Megan -  235 Points
4.        Wendi – 233 Points
