"Another Glorious Start to Football Season”
Written by Wendi
Well, it is another year for Pick ‘ems and it gives us the opportunity to bash each other’s teams and picks (and maybe your own). Depending on where you live, there may be a touch of fall in the air to complete the whole "football” theme. Or if you are like most of us, we live in the south and fall is nonexistent until "at least” the beginning of November. With the new 12 team playoff and the realignment of conferences, I am excited to see what this year holds. With that being said, let’s get to it, shall we?
Is it possible that a top 10 ranked team can get upset twice by the time week 1 ended? <checks notes> Apparently, it can. I know it was not on the picks, but FSU got upset by Georgia Tech in week 0 in Dublin, Ireland and again last night to Boston College. Sorry Adam. But if it makes you feel any better, Michigan will lose to Texas this weekend. With a brand-new offense and QB, we did not look so hot against Fresno State. Our defense won that game.
It was no surprise that Georgia ran down the throats of Clemson 34-3. You can agree or disagree but since Trevor Lawrence went to the NFL, Clemson has not been the same. Maybe Dabo Swinney needs to take a play out of Nick Saban’s playbook and retire. But I guess they are glad they don’t have DJ U as QB anymore…Too soon Adam?
What’s pathetic is that a big win for the SEC this past Saturday was Vanderbilt’s win over Virginia Tech. Yeah, it took overtime to do it but Virginia Tech went 7-6 last year so I guess that’s a big win for Vandy/SEC. Am I right? Who’s with me? <chants> "SEC, SEC, ehhhhh”.
I was hopeful that the Penn State and West Virginia game would have been a closer game but Penn State had no problem handling business on the road 34-12.
The reigning FCS Champs traveled to Stillwater to take on the Pokes of Oklahoma State. I though this game would have been a lot more interesting but maybe with former Michigan’s 6th or maybe 7th year Senior, he’s finally turning a corner. The Cowboys won easily 44-20.
With a new QB at the helm for Miami (Cam Ward from Wash St.), they feasted on some Gator meat the full 60 minutes of the game and came out victorious 41-17. They went into the Swamp and obliterated any hope from Billy Napier’s Gators. They will need this weekend’s game against FCS Samford to regain any confidence back. ICYMI, after the game, the Gator recruits were seen talking to Cam Ward. Looks like Miami may have flipped some of their recruits.
The fluff cake of the B1G, Northwestern hosted Miami of Ohio on their temporary field (did anyone see it?) and what a snoozer of a game it was. The Final was 13-6 in Northwestern’s favor.
With a combined 1,132 total yards, North Texas strolled into Mobile and took on the Jaguars of South Alabama to see who can score the most points. The 3rd quarter was the difference maker. North Texas scored four TD’s compared to USA’s one. The Mean Green won 52-38.
Houston fell flat at home against UNLV and lost 27-7. That 7 points came late in the 4th quarter. Remember years ago, when Houston was good? You may have to go back to the years of Case Keenum.
The first half of the Notre Dame vs. Texas A&M only produced fields goals and was tied at 6 at the half. Notre Dame was able to adjust on offense and was more productive in the second half. They outlasted the Aggies and the 12th man 23-13. Maybe this is the Irish’s year. Wonder if Manti Teo’s girlfriend was there?
I am sure most of you have seen the movie "The Waterboy” with Adam Sandler in it. There is a scene, where Henry Winkler is in high heels at his house talking on a phone with the phone cord detached. And he is stomping his feet saying "I hate it, I hate it, I hate it”. That is who Brian Kelly reminded me of at his press conference after the game. Maybe Coach Kelly, you need to teach your players that the game isn’t over until the clock strikes 0:00. USC won 27-20 after the Tigers quit playing with a couple of minutes left in the game. Welcome to the B1G Trojans.
On to the Pick’ems…..
Outside of Marc and Evelyn, raise your hand if you want a do-over? Last year I taught Samuel how to play Rummy and we play it often at home and keep score. When he is losing, he says, "Can we start over?”. Well, can we start over starting this week? It does not hurt to ask right?
Mike H. was so excited that he created a countdown timer several days prior to Saturday on when he would lose his 10 points. Well, it looks like your countdown timer was correct Mike. You lost it right off the bat in the first group of games. Its sweet that you included Noah in that countdown as well. You are such a good uncle to him.
As in previous years, when FSU loses, it tends to rub off on Adam. However, maybe this year he has turned a new leaf. He came in 3rd for the week. Not bad Adam, not bad at all.
The newcomers Rick and Mike M. fared well finishing up the 4th and 5th place. You may not want to get too comfortable though. You may wind up at the bottom with your kin Sean at the kiddie table soon. When I say kiddie table, I mean the usual suspects….Marc, Sean, Mike H……The kids have been fantastic lately by beating a bunch of adults.
Hey David, weren’t you jinxing Megan and Sean’s picks earlier last week? Looks like both of your entries you and Noah are at the bottom. Looks like the hex backfired a bit, don’t you think? Megan is only tied with you because Bolt did her picks. It’s not because of the jinx, right Megan? *wink wink*
My picks looked just as bad as Michigan’s offense. Anyone want to go 10 on Michigan with me this week vs Texas? Go big or go home, right?
Most points for the week: Evelyn wins the first $10 of the year. Let her have her moment. We know it won’t last.
Least points for the week: Noah tanked with 26 points.
Best pick of the week: Rick and Sean picking UNLV over Houston. Seems sus if you ask me. Some of us had some big points on Houston . Adam and Kim picking North Texas over South Alabama where some folks also had high points on the Jaguars.
Worst pick of the week: Virginia Tech sucks.
Here are the rankings after Week 1:
1. Evelyn – 44 points
2. Marc – 40 points
3. Adam – 38 points
4. Mike M. – 36 points
5. Rick – 35 points
6. Kim – 34 points
7. Sean – 34 points
8. Sam – 34 points
9. Cindie – 33 points
10. Mike H. – 32 points
11. Wendi – 31 points
12. Megan – 30 points
13. David – 30 points
14. Noah – 28 points
