Panic Week
Written by David
This was a monstrous week in college football. There were some bigtime upsets that will shake up the college football playoff landscape. Especially in the SEC.
#7 Alabama was whacked by unranked Oklahoma and lost 24-3. Florida upended #9 Ole Miss 24-17 in a shocker, and Auburn stunned #15 Texas A&M 43-41 in four overtimes. Could you have managed if those were on the picks?
The carnage also spilled into the Big 12. #14 BYU lost to #21 Arizona State 28-23, and #16 Colorado was beaten by a surging Kansas 37-21.
Ohio State essentially all but secured a spot in the Big Ten Championship game after demolishing #5 Indiana 38-15. The Hoosiers scored on their opening possession which seemingly stirred the hornets’ nest. After that, it was all Ohio State.
Illinois stunned Rutgers in a 38-31 thriller. Trailing by a point at the 40-yard line with 14 seconds to play and no timeouts, an Illinois receiver caught a pass at the 22-yard line and weaved his way into the endzone in wild finish.
Boston College had their way with North Carolina 41-21. The Tar Heels trailed 24-7 at the half and couldn’t catch up as both teams traded scores in the 4th quarter.
Liberty took care of business against Western Kentucky 38-21. The Flames racked up 419-yards on the ground and never looked back after taking a 21-7 halftime lead.
Wisconsin was no match for Nebraska as they fell to the Cornhuskers 44-25. Nebraska’s Dylan Raiola threw for 293-yards and a touchdown in the victory.
West Virginia reached bowl eligibility in their 31-21 win over UCF. The Knights have now fallen to 4-7 overall as West Virginia improved their record to 6-5.
Louisville absolutely destroyed Pittsburgh 37-9. The Cardinal piled up 507 total yards and forced three Pitt turnovers. I think everyone but Evelyn saw this one coming.
Duke was able to hold off Virginia Tech 31-28. The Hokies scored 11 fourth quarter points while shutting out Duke in the final quarter. This game had a few of us panicking since there were some high points on the line.
On to Pick’ems…
So, who’s beginning to panic with two weeks left?
What’s at stake:
1st place winner - $126
2nd place winner - $63
3rd place winner - $21
Wendi was finally forcibly removed from the top spot...by her own son. Sam is the new leader with a 9-point lead heading into the final two weeks with some big money on the line. There’s a big difference in dollars from first place to second place.
Cindie still holds onto 3rd place, but the struggle is real. She continues to slide further from the top spot which is now 17-points away. However, she knows 2nd place is well within reach.
The panic meter is going up for Megan, Mike H, and I as we try to position ourselves on challenging Cindie in 3rd place.
But who’s not panicking? Sean, Kim, and Rick are still playing in the sandbox and seem to be unaware that a contest is even taking place.
And for the sad news of the day…Marc and Evelyn STILL couldn’t muster up enough points to pass Mike M. after forgetting to submit his picks.
Most Points for the week: Adam was this week’s winner after accumulating 47 points in a VERY challenging week. He’s also $20 wealthier.
Least Points for the week: We’re not going to count the zero that’s staring us in the face from Mike M. However, another Meggers didn’t fare too well either and his name is Rick. Rick was only able to snag 25 points.
Best Pick of the week: Let’s go with Adam and I rolling the dice on Boston College beating North Carolina.
Worst Pick of the week: This week’s dishonor goes to Evelyn who decided to stick 8-points on Pitt beating Louisville. That pick didn’t even come close to happening.
There’s only two more weeks left in the contest and it’s off to Bowl Mania!
Here’s how we rank heading into Week 14:
Sam– 501 points
Wendi – 492 points
