ESPN Pick’ems Week 1 Review

College Football is back in full swing and it did not disappoint. However, Week 1 of college football was not kind to everyone.

Let’s begin with the SEC who took a bit of a reputation hit. The Vols got it started by dropping their season opener 38-30 to a Sun Belt team.  South Carolina had an epic meltdown after leading North Carolina 20-9 late in the 3rd quarter and lost 24-20. With Clemson transfer quarterback Kelly Bryant leading Missouri, the Tigers weren’t supposed to fall to Wyoming. Sure Ole Miss lost to Memphis but that was a tossup game anyway. Both Arkansas and Mississippi State had to work way too hard to finish off their cupcake opponents. And I’m confident those outside the SEC giggled as Alabama ONLY led Duke 14-3 at the half.

And just when the nation was ready for the ultimate takedown of the SEC on prime time television, Oregon missed their chances against Auburn and has now fallen to 0-4 against ranked SEC opponents. Will that game take the wind out of the Ducks National Title hopes? Only time will tell, but there’s no margin for error.

But the ACC got their eyes blackened a little in the higher profile games. Boise State rolled up over 600 yards of offense against Florida State in their 36-31 victory in Tallahassee. The Broncos also had a whopping 40 minutes in time of possession. With ACC flagship programs such as Miami and Florida State dropping their season openers, the Clemson Tigers should be able to roll through the conference schedule unscathed.

The Big 12 currently has bragging rights after each team won their season openers. The Oklahoma Sooners take on the Houston Cougars tonight and if they handle their business, the Big 12 will be undefeated heading into Week 2.

On to Pick’ems…

Let’s just get this out of the way now. I double checked my picks and originally had my 9 points on Nebraska beating South Alabama. I am not sure how the pick got switched to South Alabama. So what’s your excuse Brendan for being at the bottom with me?

Adam had his season opening debut go about the same way Florida State’s did after only getting 38 points this week. But at least he scored more points than Florida State did.

If you didn’t know, Megan got engaged Friday night and she racked up 44 points the following day. There’s no truth to the rumor that after seeing success in that, some of us will be calling Brendan with engagement proposals with the sole purpose of having some luck with our picks. But it sure as hell didn’t help his picks. Congrats Megan and congrats to any of you who also get engaged to Brendan this week.

With Mike attending the Alabama – Duke Game with Cindie and I in Atlanta, he’s actually gone to more BAMA games than Auburn games. He’ll know the words to Alabama’s fight song the next time he goes to a game. Feel free to text Mike how you feel about him coming out as a Tide fan in 3...2…1…

Yeah, Yeah, Yeah, can Wendi do THAT each week? I don’t think so either.

Most points for the week: Wendi ripped off 48 points and is off to a hot start.

Least Points for the week: Brendan and I with 35 points… and the sad face.

Best Pick of the week: Marc and Megan picking Boston College to beat Virginia Tech. Heck, Megan had 6 points on that game. Yeesh.

Worst Pick of the week: Me and my 9 points on South Alabama over Nebraska. If it had been the correct pick, I would have been tied for 3rd place. But I guess a little adversity can’t hurt.

Who needs the $120 this week? Mike could use the money this week after getting overcharged for the Alabama Duke game tickets which went as low as $16. But instead, he wanted better seats and paid the price.

Here’s how we rank going into week 2:

1. Wendi – 48 points

2. Mike – 45 Points

3. Cindie – 44 Points

4. Megan – 44 Points

5. Teddy – 43 Points

6. Mom – 42 Points

7. Kim – 42 Points

8. Marc – 41 Points

9. Dave – 41 Points

10. Adam – 38 Points

11. David – 35 Points

12. Brendan – 35 Points
